At Song Helsinki studio, we are a team with members from all over the world, each with our own unique stories, backgrounds and creative skills. This cookbook is all about celebrating that richness and flavour we all bring to the table.

Think of this book as a map, with endless possibilities to be explored - combinations of tastes, styles and approaches. Let it inspire you to create meals that bring people together - for the love of food, culture and creativity.

Background

Why would a group of creatives, designers and technologists want to make a cookbook? The answer is quite clear, at least to us: food is a key part of our culture. It’s something that brings us together and allows us to express ourselves and where we come from. And it’s part of our office rituals: our weekly breakfasts, made by the team, are a cornerstone of our studio community.

In short, the book you hold in your hands is a labour of love. It’s a compilation of recipes with meaning. And it’s a story of diversity, craft, and passion – three core values that characterize our Helsinki team. We hope you’ll be inspired to put your culinary skills to the test and, in doing so, discover something new, unexpected, and (most importantly!) tasty.

Creative approach

We’ve combined two of our favorite activities – cooking and orienteering – to deliver a flavorful journey like no other.

*Orienteering, a sport that’s popular in Nordic countries, involves navigating unfamiliar terrain using only a map and compass. In this case, we’re inviting you to navigate the landscape of our studio through recipes, using your nose and taste buds as your guide.

Maps and symbols are the key ingredients of orienteering. 18 symbols have been matched based on features of cooking and dishes.

Each recipe is described using five symbols on the recipe page:

A. Point number
B. Category of dish
C. Backstory
D. Dietary considerations
E. Main cooking method

With help from these symbols, we hope you’ll have many unique, meaningful, and delicious encounters with foods from our people’s diverse cultures. To us, cooking is a chance to connect with others and explore the world, and these signature orienteering courses are the perfect way to do it.

There are two paths for readers to choose:

1. Follow your taste buds.
: Choose from four categories: sides, mains, desserts, and drinks.

2. Follow your adventurous spirit.
: We’ve curated eight *orienteering courses with love and care. They take you on a journey through 42 recipes and numerous personal stories from 15 countries, and courses range from quick and simple to slow and savory, so you can pick your own pace.
